Honnie Goode : Artist Statement
"As an artist I combine an intuitive approach to image making with the structured framework of learned technique. Ultimately, by combining the emotional with the rational, I aspire to achieve a balance within myself. My intent is to illicit an emotional response, in hopes that the viewer will have more than just a superficial experience. Even though I am mostly recognized as a painter, I do not label myself as such, and instead consider myself an artist who enjoys delving into new processes. When making art, translating the idea is what is most important and the most essential part of what I do. The conceptual framework and how it is best translated ultimately dictates the medium I will use. Through this method of art making I am always learning, and through the act of creating I find meaning and truth about myself, and my environment."

Honnie has a BFA in painting with an emphasis on printmaking from Atlanta College of Art, Atlanta, Georgia 1996. She lives and works in South Portland, Maine, with her husband, Todd, and two lovely little girls.

Alisha Gould : Artist Statement
"I am a graduate of the sculpture department at Rhode Island School of Design, now living in Kennebunk, Maine. My recent move from this sleepy tourist town on the craggy coast of Maine to an expanding industrial city in the middle of the Canadian prairies – and back again – has led me to explore the concept of home.

Isolated as a not-yet-legal immigrant, I struggled to build a sense of community and familiarity in a landlocked landscape dominated by a profusion of fluorescent billboards, strip malls, and overcrowded sub-divisions. My displacement led me to investigate the idea of dwelling.

As a term, dwelling relates to both the theme of my sculpture and my often repetitious process. As a philosophical concept developed by Heidegger, it ponders the relationship between nature and man. I create organic forms inspired by natural abodes such as nests, hives, cocoons, barnacles and urchins employing handmade methods and simple materials. These shapes use multiples, pattern, vibrant color and alluring texture to produce polarities such as interior/exterior, natural/artificial, one/many and attraction/aversion. In “Urchin”, the graphic, inked exterior bristles with thousands of angry spines and contrasts with the quilted velvet interior. The shell’s thorny shield forms a menacing defense for the plush haven within."
